The Best Outdoor Security Systems for Home | A Guide for 2023

With criminal activity on the rise, more and more people are kitting out their homes with some form of outdoor security system.

As a company that specialises in specialised CCTV systems for residential and commercial properties, we wanted to run through the best outdoor security systems that you can buy on a budget, along with what we think will provide you with the most protection.

So let’s jump right in.

The best outdoor security systems for home if you’re on a budget.

The Eufy SoloCam E40

This Eufycam is considered by a lot of independent reviewers to be one of the best value outdoor home security cameras available.

What we like: 2K resolution camera, long battery life, weatherproof, adjustable motion detection activity zones, AI person facial recognition field of view.

What we don’t like: There have been some data-breach concerns about Eufy cameras, limited when it comes to 24/7 monitoring, images and facial recognition data can sometimes be stored in the cloud storage without the user’s consent.

Price: £119.99

The Arlo Pro 4

The successor to the Arlo Pro 3 is one of the most popular Arlo cameras on the market currently and is not a bad outdoor home security camera.

What we like: 2K video resolution camera, easy to install, runs off rechargeable batteries, colour night vision, works with Amazon’s Alexa, Apple Homekit and Google Assistant.

What we don’t like: Many features are locked behind a monthly fee subscription model (including person detection), pricey for what it is.

Price: £149.99

The Blink Outdoor

These dinky battery-powered cameras are an increasingly popular site across UK homes and have a field view of 110 degrees.

What we like: Long battery life (up to 2 years, from a single pair of AA batteries), weather-resistant, communicates wirelessly with a small base station that’s connected to your Wi-Fi network; two-way audio so that you can speak to people through the camera’s microphone and speakers.

What we don’t like: There have been concerns over how easy it is to hack into a Blink camera, with hackers even able to access the two-way audio. The resolution is only 1080p, and it no longer has free cloud storage (you’ll now have to pay a monthly fee).

Price: £89.99

The Ring Spotlight Cam

Everyone’s familiar with Ring’s video doorbells, but what about Ring’s very own CCTV cameras? This outdoor model has a built-in siren to strike the fear into any potential intruders.

What we like: Easy to install, wide-angle camera lens, infrared night vision, two-way audio, and a motion-activated spotlight.

What we don’t like: Expensive subscription model, big delays on what the camera records and what you can see on screen, only records in 30-second increments and below-par 1080p video quality.

Price: £119.99

The Wyze Cam v3

The handy thing about this Wyze cam outdoor model is that it’s so cheap you can buy a few of them to cover all corners of the house. And although cloud storage is not free, you have the option for local storage with the built-in micro SD card slot.

What we like: Very budget friendly, two-way talk and audio, 130-degree view, compatible with Alexa and Google Assistant.

What we don’t like: Subscription fees, not HomeKit compatible, low-key 1080p resolution, and some concerns about the manufacturer’s vulnerability to hackers

Price: £63.00

What should you expect from the best outdoor security cameras?

All of the cameras above have their uses, but they also have their limitations. They’re essentially security camera systems with a pinch of salt, designed to give the appearance of security, but without any serious functionalities to back them up.

Put it another way — if a criminal is determined to break and enter a property, the best budget single camera models are unlikely to be much of a deterrent. In fact they can be a signal that the property is actually poorly defended.

The good news is, you can get a commercial-grade CCTV solution for your home that’s tailor-fit to your business.

We can offer you a bespoke, first-rate CCTV system for your home.

Our smart home CCTV solutions are the same ones that businesses use — and with our custom packages you can get a true smart security system within your price range.

Here are some of the features of our specialised CCTV solutions:

  • Customisation motion zones — if an unwanted person enters one of these zones then you can get motion alerts sent right to your mobile. Once the motion sensor is tripped, you can set your live feed to trigger an alarm whilst video recording the event.
  • The latest technological updates — our pros will trial and manage any technological updates over a multi-month testing period before updating your CCTV units accordingly.
  • Minimal false alarms — with the budget cameras above, you’re bound to experience many notifications for false alarms. But our advanced security cameras can automatically filter out events for the most accurate vehicle and person detection.
  • High-quality colour night vision — the single pixel area of our HD CCTV security cameras is nearly twice as large as that of a standard sensor. This dramatically increases the amount of light flowing through, which is an important factor in achieving superior low-light performance.
  • Advanced “blacklist” and “whitelist” face detection smart features — control access to entry points with an identity library based on face recognition. Save a person’s face to a ‘blacklist’ or VIP ‘whitelist’ library, with alarms triggered for faces not recorded in the library, in order to prevent stranger intrusions or infiltration attempts.
  • Easy integration into other home security features — Connect your outdoor home security system up with video intercom devices, NVRs, DVRs, security control panels and more for a truly water-tight system, and control everything from your Mobile CCTV app.
  • Enjoy the highest-quality features — including built-in spotlight and floodlight cameras, the highest HD video resolutions, pan and tilt functionalities so that you can see all of your property, and more.
