OUR ACCREDITATIONS
It is the responsibility of the person with control over premises, to carry out a fire risk assessment to identify any hazards associated with the structure, means of escape, detection/ alarm systems, emergency procedures, training and provisions for fighting fires. A fire risk assessment involves an in-depth assessment of the hazards, identifying issues that require attention to reduce the chances of a fire and to ensure that in the event of a fire, everyone can leave the building as quickly as possible to reach a place of safety. We will carry out an assessment of your premises, processes and systems to determine the likely risk of fire and make recommendations to reduce or eliminate the risk.
In carrying out this assessment, we will refer to all relevant legislation, guidance and British Standards, such as:
- Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005
- Building Regulations 2000 – Approved Document B, Fire Safety
- BS5588-11: Fire precautions in the design, construction and use of buildings

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
The answer is most probably yes. The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 makes it compulsory by law for every business, even if you have only one employee, to carry out a Fire Risk Assessments. If you employ five or more people you are required by law to be able to produce a written Fire Risk Assessment on demand. Charity or voluntary organizations, contractors with a degree of control over any premises and landlords or managing agents of properties in multiple occupation (HMO, s) will all require a Fire Risk Assessment.
A Fire Risk Assessment is NOT optional it is obligatory by law.
The Order says that the ‘Responsible Person’ who is usually defined by the legislation as the employer, has to undertake a Fire Risk Assessment. If your organization employs five or more people you have to record the findings of your assessment. A Responsible Person is defined nearly always being the employer, where there is one, though it can include other individuals too. If you share a building with other organizations, the responsibility may be shared among several people. If you have responsibility for the other people in your organization, it is safe to assume you will be the Responsible Person, even if others are too. The responsibilities are
- Fire Risk Assessment
- Fire Safety Policy
- Fire Procedures (such as evacuation)
- Staff Training
- Fire Drills
- Means of Escape
- Signs and Notices
- Emergency Lighting
- Fire Alarm
- Fire Extinguishers
- Fire Doors and Compartmentation
This could be an employee or an outside Fire Assessor consultant. Competence is demonstrated through sufficient training, experience and knowledge. A Competent Person must be appointed to carry out Fire Fighting duties (where appropriate), contact the Emergency Services, and assist in evacuations.
The purpose of our Fire Risk Assessment report is to make you aware of the required fire safety measures you may have to implement to ensure that all people on your premises are safe and you fully comply with the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005.
Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 there are three relevant notices that can be served on you should you receive a visit from the Fire Brigade, these are; an enforcement notice, an alterations notice and a prohibition notice.
An enforcement notice is a document which is sent to the responsible person from a fire authority stating that the enforcing authority (fire service) is of the opinion that the responsible person or any other person as is applicable has failed to comply with any provision of the Fire Safety Order 2005 or of any regulations made under it.
An alterations notice is a document which is sent to the responsible person from a fire authority stating that the enforcing authority (the fire and rescue service) is of the opinion that the premises constitute, or may constitute, a risk to relevant persons if a change is made to them or the use to which they are put. The notice must state that the enforcing authority is of the above opinion, and, specify the matters which constitute such a risk. Where a notice has been served the responsible person must notify the enforcing authority of any proposed changes.
If the enforcing authority is of the opinion that use of premises involves or will involve a risk to relevant persons so serious that use of the premises ought to be prohibited or restricted. If you have received any of the above please contact us or if the situation is very urgent call us at 020 8840 2111.
Insurance companies will expect you to ensure your premises comply with the fire regulations. The last thing you would want is any problems with a claim should the worst occur. There are potentially very stringent penalties for none compliance with the Regulatory Reform Order such as very high fines and imprisonment.

The assessment should take into account such activities as maintenance and cleaning as well as the main production task. There may also be a need to measure the level of exposure to the substance(s) in order to assess the risk accurately.
Where flammable liquids or gases are in use, we will also consider the requirements of the Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations and guidance from the HSE.
